A jacket can look better with a few pins and still need more work than you expected. Before you pay for an alteration, look beyond the outside shape: lining, seams, old folds, closures and worn cloth can all change the proposal. A fitting preview starts the conversation; it cannot tell you everything hidden inside the garment. I’m Sofia Romano. We’ll work through the questions that help you discuss a particular garment with a tailor, from a trouser hem to a jacket whose comfort changes when you move. There is no universal spare inch, fixed alteration price or rule that makes every shoulder impossible and every waist easy. What matters is the construction, condition, result you want and the work included in your quote. In this video: 1.Check the garment’s construction and available material. 2.Ask what a hem change could expose at the old fold. 3.Include the lining and other layers in the discussion. 4.Try the intended fit with your usual clothes and shoes. 5.Compare the actual quote with your reasons for keeping the piece. A sentimental coat may deserve a different decision from a secondhand jacket you have not bought yet. Bring the concern, ask about the proposed work and its limits, and agree on the scope before anything irreversible happens. Which garment is waiting in your wardrobe because you’re unsure whether an alteration is worthwhile?
