In this video I sew a 1940s couture coat and dress entirely from vintage patterns, using hand-finished couture techniques from the first cut to the last stitch. Along the way I trace the lives of the women behind the era — and the heroine who inspired Lara in Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago — and find unexpected parallels in my own story. The patterns are a 1946 Hollywood Pattern Company dress, originally illustrated for the actress Geraldine Fitzgerald, and a 1949 Vogue Paris Original (Vogue 1669) for the opera coat. Chapters: 00:00 – Teaser: styling the white coat three ways, and introduction 02:03 – How it began: the inspiration behind the project 06:45 – Toile of the dress and fit review 11:01 – Reciting Boris Pasternak's poem 12:23 – Cutting and constructing the dress, with the stories of women who inspired me 14:30 – Dress progress: learning couture techniques 23:00 – Dress and coat assembled: final touches and reveal on the mannequin 27:15 – Couture construction of the opera coat 36:15 – Final styling outdoors: a tribute to women, and a personal reflection Follow the full process — fabric selection, the toile and fit review, couture construction, and the finishing details of the opera-style coat — alongside the stories of the resilient women who shaped both these garments and their decade. Beneath the sewing runs a quieter thread: how making something by hand can become a path to reflection, healing, and self-discovery. There is Russian poetry here, too, including a moment with Pasternak's verse. If you love vintage fashion, couture sewing, fashion history, and the stories behind the clothes, consider subscribing.
