Today I’m sewing a classic French couture jacket inspired by Chanel’s most iconic design, using traditional haute couture construction techniques. I am using Vogue Pattern V 8804 from Custom Couture Collection by Claire Shaeffer as the basis. This is my first time building a true Chanel-style jacket, and in this video I walk through the couture process step by step — including internal support methods that maintain softness without added structure, hand-applied trims, structured patch pockets, precise button placement, and meticulous hand finishing. Chapters: 0:00 – Introduction | Sewing a Classic Couture Jacket (Part II) 0:52 – Gabrielle Chanel & Maria Pavlovna Meet in Paris | Who Was Chanel, Really? 6:49 – Constructing the Jacket | Hand-Sewn Interfacing, Wigan & Reflections on Loss 12:20 – The House of Chanel in the 1920s | The KITMIR Embroidery Atelier 18:34 – Secrets of Couture Sleeve Finishes 24:50 – Russian Cultural Influences on the House of Chanel | No. 5, Pearls & Embroidery 29:15 – Where the Storylines Diverge | The Complicated Legacy of Chanel & The Evolution of the Iconic Cardigan Jacket 34:44 – Final Finishing Touches | Irony in Chanel’s Life & A Poetry Moment (W.B. Yeats, When You Are Old) 38:26 – The Finished Jacket & Skirt Reveal Inspired by the iconic work of Gabrielle Chanel, this project explores the authentic techniques behind the classic French jacket silhouette — a cornerstone of couture tailoring and luxury fashion. As I sew, I continue the historical story of Chanel’s collaboration with Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia and the legendary Paris embroidery house Kitmir, whose intricate hand embroidery helped elevate Chanel’s garments to couture status in 1920s Paris. In this video you’ll learn about: • Chanel jacket construction techniques • French couture sewing methods • Building internal jacket support • Hand-sewn trims and finishing • Couture tailoring details • The history behind Chanel’s early couture house If you’re interested i
