Why did humans start wearing clothes when other animals already had fur, feathers, or scales? The answer may be far more complicated than simply staying warm. In this video, we trace the origins of human clothing and examine what scientists can tell us about the earliest clothes humans may have worn. Because clothing is made from materials like animal skins, hides, and plant fibers, much of the physical evidence has disappeared over thousands of years. We explore several clues surrounding when humans started wearing clothes, including animal hides, hide-working tools, archaeology, ancient environments, and even clothing lice. These clues help researchers investigate how early humans adapted to cold climates and other environmental challenges. But clothing wasn't only about survival. As human societies became more complex, what people wore could also communicate culture, identity, tradition, group belonging, and social status. So when did humans begin covering their bodies, and what pushed them toward clothing in the first place? This video explores the history of clothing, the possible origins of human garments, archaeological evidence from deep prehistory, and how a basic form of environmental protection eventually became an important part of human culture.
