Burberry began in 1856 as a small clothing business in Hampshire. Thomas Burberry developed gabardine, a weather-resistant fabric that helped establish the company's reputation for practical outdoor clothing. Its trench coats later became associated with British military history, explorers and generations of customers, turning a functional garment into one of the world's most recognisable fashion icons. By 2025, the company was under significant financial pressure. Revenue fell to £2.46 billion for the year ending March 2025, while adjusted operating profit dropped from £418 million to just £26 million. Under chief executive Joshua Schulman, Burberry launched its Burberry Forward strategy, refocusing on outerwear and scarves to reconnect with its roots. The following year brought signs of improvement, with adjusted operating profit rising to £160 million. Its iconic trench coats are still made in Yorkshire, using gabardine woven in England. But the challenge remains: can Burberry turn its British heritage into lasting commercial success while convincing customers that its luxury prices are justified by the quality of its products? #Burberry #BurberryTrenchCoat #BritishFashion #LuxuryFashion #FashionHistory #BritishBrands #ThomasBurberry #LuxuryBrands #BusinessHistory #CorporateHistory 👇 Do you or someone in your family own a Burberry trench coat, scarf or another classic piece?
